Our origin was in 1899, when Charles Kasten formed a jewelry store in downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In 1936, Bill Schwanke (Tom's great uncle), a watchmaker, bought into the company to form Schwanke-Kasten Jewelers as we know it today. Fast forward to 1984 ?Tom's father Malcolm bought the remaining shares of the store from the Schwanke family after working there for over 30 years. When Malcolm unexpectedly passed in 1986, Tom left his job as a buyer at Marshall Fields to run, and eventually purchase, the family business. Presently, Tom, his wife Joanne, his son Charlie, and his sister Patty are actively involved in the store's operations. We have had a very exciting and storied history along the way, from importing Rolex replica watches from Canada in the '30s to providing the silverware set for the commissioning of the U.S.S. Wisconsin in the '40s (and the recommissioning in the '80s). We were also among the first 10 authorized Breitling dealers in the United States. They came, like most immigrants of their time, with nothing. My dad went to a trade school in Denver to become a watchmaker, and the rest is history! We opened our first location on a very busy street in Denver. We added a second location in the 'burbs almost 13 years ago. I love that we truly have a family business. My parents, my brother, my sister, and I run the stores, along with our chosen family ?our employees. Our crew is incredibly diverse, and we are a better family and a better business because we bring the best of all of our cultures together. We have been focusing on supporting our watch loving community during this crazy time by honoring our heroes. For the past three weeks, we have done a drawing for #RightTimeHeroes. Our customers from all across the world were encouraged to nominate their heroes, and we received so many inspiring nominations that we went from a one-time drawing to a weekly drawing. Our heroes are as diverse as our store. We received nominations for mailmen, grocery distribution directors, doctors, nurses, paramedics, firefighters, mask-making neighbors, teachers, prison employees, and inspirational children. From Kinetic, to Astron, to Sring Drive, Prospex, and Grand Seiko, it has been a wonderful journey. We love how Seiko appeals to watch enthusiasts, both young and old. The brand has evolved just as our customers' taste evolves as they expand their collections. Grand Seiko is so fun to partner with. We love when the watchmakers come from Japan to do demonstrations in our store, the anticipation for new limited editions, and just enjoying the new developments in dials, cases, and movements.
